Avoiding email scams

This week, an email pretending to be from me, was sent to our Treasurer to try to get her to pay a large bill. Thankfully, Julie clicked on my name (which is sometimes all you will see) and it showed that the email came from someone quite random. She therefore didn’t get caught.

Some things to learn:

  1. If in doubt click on the name from which you get the email so you can see the whole email address.
  2. A good practice in business is NOT to reply to any finance email using ‘reply to’ but rather respond by beginning a new email with the address that you know I or any of us use. This applies to your personal stuff too.
  3. Without the authority of the PCC I can only spend up to £500 unless authorising a payment which has been agreed previously by the PCC or through the Community Care network grants. If I am asking you to pay a bill without your prior knowledge be curious.
  4. If expecting the treasurer to pay something remember she works full time
  5. Send a text through WhatsApp as well as an email, confirming this is what is required and why.
